A Taste of Fall: Nostalgia with a Side of Apple Crisp

Nothing says fall or home to me like a bushel of apples. I grew up in Connecticut, and our house was close to three apple orchards, including my favorite, Roger’s Orchards.

Around this time of year, we’d always have a ton of apples from Roger’s: McIntosh, Ida Reds, Cortland, Empire, Red Delicious, and more. I can’t remember when we didn’t have apples in the house.

Recipe FAQs

Is apple crisp the same as apple crumble?

No, the two are similar, but the main difference is in the dessert’s toppings.

Apple Crumble has more of a streusel topping made from butter, flour, sugar, and sometimes nuts. Apple crisp topping is less dense than a crumble and typically includes oats.

What apples are best for apple crisp?

While almost every kind of apple will work when making apple crisp, Granny Smith is the best, followed by Empire and Honey Crisp. While these are my favorites, any apple (or combination of apples) will work except for McIntosh. McIntosh is too soft. When cooked, it will have an applesauce-like consistency.

Why does my crumble topping go soggy?

There is likely too much butter. Too much butter can create too much grease while it is baking. Try cutting a little butter out when making the recipe.
