Building Materials and Construction Module -1 Lecture -1 Functions of Buildings, Role of Construction Materials etc
Jay Maniyar
Welcome to NPTEL project, building materials and construction. This is module one and in the module one we shall be dealing with function of building, requirements of functional requirements of building, types of loads and role of materials. The course is on materials and construction. The first thing we got to understand is the role of materials and to understand the role of materials, it is necessary to understand what are the functions of buildings and structures and that is why, this module includes this four components, okay. (Refer Slide Time: 02:06) So, general outline of the course, we can look into like functions of buildings and structures, as I mentioned just now, followed by types of loads and structures, then functional requirements of buildings, because load is one issue in case of buildings and structures. But there are functional issues, so we shall be discussing functional

This article paper has been made and will provide a course background based on hands-on experiences with the requirement of building built construction involving any facilities, which is an environmental process and management from start to finish methodology. An introduction that will give a glimpse concerning the design of a building construction following the client requirement and purpose of the development that explains and discuss the necessary phases, elements, usage, and functions of every detail of the project. And thus, providing a learning process and experiences that apply in practice as well as the course of my study and research in particular with building services engineering design management, which would like to share as a guide on the design aspect and even in the construction side. An excerpt from my "Building Services Engineering Management," my research thesis submitted to the Atlantic International University (AIU USA) in one of the approved subject courses curricula with Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2010-2012, received a grade of 4.0 (“A” US Grade System). However, this thesis write-up is one of the sources in the preparation and finalizing my Thesis Dissertation with my PUP (Polytechnic University of the Philippines) Master of Science in Construction Management.

An Overview of Conventional Construction Materials And Their Characteristics
North American Academic Research, 7(1), 1-13. , 2024

For a construction project to be deemed acceptable, it is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of materials during both the design and construction stages. It is important to evaluate the financial feasibility and the societal and ecological consequences of a project. During the first design phase, consideration of potential alternative sites and a preliminary evaluation of appropriate construction materials are undertaken. The selection of the optimal structural form and material is contingent upon several aspects, such as cost, physical characteristics, longevity, and material accessibility. In modern times, investors and engineers are seeking robust, lightweight, and cost-effective materials to construct sustainable structures. In recent years, numerous new materials have been developed, and there are still many inventors actively searching for novel materials and alternative approaches. Engineers are utilizing the properties of materials to develop a new environmentally friendly construction project. Revolutionary technologies have improved the majority of newly developed sustainable construction materials in both their production and application, outperforming many conventional construction materials. These advancements have rendered numerous conventional construction materials more economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and technologically robust. Additionally, the subsequent approach and technologies aid in reducing the impact of climate change. The presented paper offers an overview of conventional construction materials that aid us in developing innovative construction materials for mitigating climate change. These materials include sand, brick, timber, and water. Traditional construction materials are commonly used in construction projects. In this discussion, we will explore the characteristics of materials, including many types of traditional materials, as well as their purposes and functions. The composition of the substance can differ depending on the local climate, atmospheric pressure, and mostly the topography.

Ch 7 Fundamentals of Building Construction Materials 5th
Emmerson Archer
7 Architect Michael Craig Moore uses a rich palette of stone and wood for fl oors and millwork contrasting elegantly with light-colored walls and ceiling surfaces. In the foreground is slate fl ooring. Stairs and wood fl oors are heartwood only pine (" heart pine "). Wood cabinets and trim are vertical grain Douglas Fir. Cabinet counters and the window seat top (middleground of the image) are a composite sheet material made from compressed paper and phenolic resin. Cabinet pulls are bronze. The exposed structural wood column, to the right in the image, is also Douglas Fir. All wood surfaces are fi nished with clear polyurethane. Walls and ceilings are covered with standard gypsum wallboard fi nished with latex primer and top coats. (Photograph by Michael Craig Moore, AIA) JWBK274_Ch07.indd 255 10/30/08 3:14:53 AM
