Greek locals including bar staff joined the hunt for Dr Michael Mosley - before making a grim discovery when something 'unusual' was spotted close to where the Mail's much-loved health guru was last seen.

A man named Anotonios has told ofseeing the bodyof the missing TV medic as he broke down in tears, saying: 'I wish we had better news.'

Lefteris Papakalodoukas, the mayor of the Greek island of Symi where Dr Mosley as staying, has described noticing something 'unusual' during the search and alerting nearby bar staff.

And Agia Marina bar manager Ilias Tsavaris was with reporters for the discovery of the body, which Greek police have now confirmed was 67-year-old Dr Mosley.

The find was first made by a local camera crew that had been filming from the sea near the beach in Agia Marina on theGreekisland of Symi.

Anotonios, the cameraman who claims he spotted Dr Mosley's remains near a fence on the beach, told Sky News he was on a boat about 300 metres away when he saw the horrific scene.

'I'm really sorry for the family. I'm sorry that I'm the one to find him,' he told the broadcaster as his eyes filled with tears. 'I wish we had better news.'

Greek police have confirmed that the bodyfound in a rocky area beside Agia Marina is that of The Mail columnist.

Dr Mosley's remains were discoveredafter an extensive search operationled by emergency workers,around 30 minutes walk from the village of Pedi where Mosley was last seen.

The TV personality was with friends at Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday, before going alone for a walk.

The body was found by staff at a nearby beach bar after being alerted by the mayor that something 'unusual' had been spotted from the sea.

Anotonios said had been on the boat with the mayor when he saw the body near a fence outside the beach, roughly 300 metres away.

He used his camera to zoom in on the scene, which appeared to be a body, and alerted the mayor 'who was sitting next to me'. A team reportedly found the remains shortly afterwards.

On Saturday, a Greek fire brigade helicopter had circled the wider Pedi area for several hours and hovered over the spot where the body was found.

Mr Tsavaris, 38, was among the staff and journalists who first saw the body after the mayor alerted staff they 'saw something' by the fence of the bar.

He said: 'They saw it with the boat. The mayor came and saw something so that is when they called me and said "Hey they saw something go and check there".

'They called me, they said "You know what we saw something from far away, can you go and check" so I went there.

'So when I walked up I saw something like a body to make sure. You don't see a dead body everyday, it is not a warzone, it's summer you are supposed to have fun and swimming.

'He came from Pedi OK, and he walked not through the restaurant. If he had walked through there (the bar) we would have checked the cameras.

He said 'rescuers had searched that area everyday with helicopters'.

Police arrived around 20 minutes after staff discovered the body.A short while later a coastguard boat arrived and anchored just off the beach while a small tender with more officers to the scene.

Mr Papakalodoukas said: 'We analysed the recorded evidence and it was obvious that it was, unfortunately, Mosley.

'He was found 10 metres away from the sea, 10-15 metres from his destination, the beach of Agia Marina, between a fence and a path.'

'It is unclear if he had an accident or if he felt unwell,' Papakalodoukas added.

Petros Vassilakis, a senior police official, on Sunday confirmed 'it's him', while sources said the TV doctor was identified by his personal items and clothes.

Dr Mosley's children were just 350ft away from where their father's body was found today when they retraced his steps on Saturday.

Mosley, who was on the island with his wife, was last seen alive at 1.30pm on Wednesday. His children arrived in Symi on Friday.

Symi, part of the Dodecanese island chain, is about 10 miles long and has 2,500 residents.

It appeared the Mail columnist had walked around the perimeter of the beach bar at Agia Marina and was heading towards the sea.

A kiosk at the bar looks towards the headland where the body was found and police are working on the theory he had been dead for 'several days'.

The walk from St Nicholas beach to where the tragic discovery was madeis around three miles and would have taken little more than an hour.

The search effort for the missing doctor had been widespread, operating in dangerous conditions and high temperatures, and has included police, firefighters with drones, Greek Red Cross workers, divers, a search dog and a helicopter.

Greek authorities shifted their focus to a treacherous mountainous area after CCTV footage from a house at the edge of a small marina in the village of Pedi showed the presenter walking towards a mountainous path at about 2pm local time on Wednesday.

New footage released on Saturday also appeared to show Mosley walking unimpeded with an umbrella near to the marina.

Since news broke that Dr Mosley had been found dead, tributes have poured in for him.

Saleyha Ahsan, a doctor who worked with Mosley at the BBC, hailed him as a'national treasure' and gave her 'heartfelt condolences' to his family.

'He lived and breathed his work,' she told Sky News. 'He was an inspiration.'

'Michael's advice, the 5:2 diet, that has really changed the approach of so many people about their health,' she said, adding that he was 'so caring' and'cared about the health of the nation'.

Professor Alice Roberts, who worked with Dr Mosley on BBC programmes, said she 'can't believe he's gone' and issued her condolences to his 'bereaved family'.
