Congratulations to our amazing critical care nursing teams for achieving Beacon Awards for Excellence from the AACN (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses). Our 3G Neuro-ICU received a Silver-Level designation (the second for this unit) and our 4H Burn/Trauma ICU received Gold, the highest a team can earn. The AACN Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes critical care units that distinguish themselves by providing high-quality patient care in a healthy work environment. We are so proud of this national recognition for our extraordinary nurses!

Our care for the community extends beyond the walls of our hospital. Recently, a group of volunteers from our senior nursing leadership team and community outreach committee hosted a health fair at Bread for the City's Northwest Food Pantry. We offered health screenings and education on hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and mental health (focused on suicide prevention) and helped patrons select nutritious items from the food market. Our nurses are THE BEST!Back L-R: Fanya DeJesus, Kristin Spurr, Norma Gray-Clark, Evelyn Diop, Rachel Watkins, Shirley Dewitt, Jani North Saale and (Front L-R) Yelena Tuerk, Ariam Yitbarek, and Carrie Richardson

There is no one more deserving of the MedStar Health Impact Award than our nurse Raiza Majam! MedStar Health Chief Nursing Officer LynnMarie Verzino recently visited the hospital and surprised Raiza with this special honor for her unparalleled passion for nursing and outstanding contributions to MedStar Health. Raiza takes a proactive approach to nursing and serves as the co-chair of several hospital councils. She has led re-education initiatives to promote safe, high-quality care. An advocate for wellbeing, Raiza created three “wellness lockers” for staff filled with resources and snacks. She is also a champion on our journey to Magnet designation, which is the highest distinction for nursing that a hospital can receive. Raiza's leadership, collaborative approach, and commitment to patient care have helped drive positive patient outcomes, staff engagement, and overall organizational performance. She is a shining example of what it means to be an exceptional MedStar Health nurse. We're so proud of you, Raiza. Congratulations!

We couldn't be prouder of our associates who volunteered at this year's Capital Pride Festival to celebrate and support our LGBTQ+ community! We joined in the parade Saturday and passed out sunscreen and other helpful, healthful goodies from our booth during Sunday's celebration. We show up for our community because it's how we treat people. #MedStarHealthProud#PrideMonth

Our patients mean the world to us, and we live by the MedStar Health motto “It’s how we treat people.” Parking Director Sehaye Meskel is renowned for treating people with the utmost respect. A long-time patient wrote to hospital President Gregory J. Argyros, MD, noting she had found a handicapped parking space in the garage but still had a long walking journey to her appointment. Then, along came Sehaye. “He assisted me into a wheelchair and pushed it right up to the registration desk in the hospital, then took me to my appointment on the fifth floor! He suggested I use the valet service in the future and showed me how to access it.” She went on to write “I have never – not once! – experience anything but attentive and polite conversation by all employees.” To our patient, thank you for your generous and kind words. To Sehaye, you have been on our ONE TEAM for 37 years and counting. You so deserve this SPIRIT Shout Out!Photo: Sehaye (left) photographed with Dr. Argyros.
