The Amalfi Coast: an unforgettable experience by car | e-borghi (1)

The Amalfi Coast has been chosen as the backdrop for some of the most famous films of all time. From 'Journey to Italy', starring the wonderful Ingrid Bergman, to 'Mr and Mrs Smith', starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the list is long and spans different eras and film genres.

Accomplice the Hollywood echo, combined with the actual beauty of these lands that have enchanted tourists from all over the world for centuries, a trip to this Italian paradise is an experience that everyone, at least once in their life, wants to try. As with any destination, however, it is important to plan the itinerary well and prepare for our tour.

The most characteristic element of the Amalfi coast, which winds for about 60 km starting in Positano and ending in Amalfi, is precisely the factor that can create difficulties in practice. We all have, in our minds, images of the typical narrow, winding roads that look out over the sea, with a succession of inlets and points.

The scenery is incredibly impressive and certainly repays the road travelled to get there, but getting behind the wheel is a different kettle of fish. This does not mean giving up on our destination: if thousands of tourists flock to the Amalfi coast every year, the undertaking is not so complicated.

What is important, if we decide not to take a rental car (also considering the fairly high cost of renting during the high season), is to set off with a safe, well-maintained car.

Needless to say, since these are narrow roads with many bends, even sharp ones, the shock absorber, suspension and brake system must be practically immaculate. The same applies to tyres and car fluids. You can find out more about this on the auto-doc.co.uk website, both with regard to the necessary car checks and the possibility of finding spare parts quickly.

Once we have planned the checks on our car that will accompany us throughout our dream holiday, it is time to think about how to organise our trip. What is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast, and which destinations should definitely be included in our tour?

Amalfi and its coast dotted with small villages

Deciding when to visit a tourist resort is, unfortunately, not always entirely up to us. Most people can only go on holiday in July and August, which, everywhere, are therefore particularly crowded. The cost of services is also higher in the high season, and sometimes the difference can be as much as 100 per cent.

So if you have the chance to choose the months of May-June and September.October, don't think twice: less chaos, less traffic and lower prices, without giving up the sun and beautiful days.

As for destinations, here are a few suggestions to put on your list:

  • Vietri sul Mare: your trip to this wonderful part of Italy can begin with Vietri sul Mare, a real living postcard. Even at a glance, it is easy to guess what the characteristic product of this town is: ceramics. The narrow streets in the centre, winding like a ball of yarn, are adorned with ceramic decorations. If you want to learn more about this part of Vietri's history, you can visit the Museum of Ceramics, which houses exhibits dating back to the 18th century.
  • Positano: Whether you are a limoncello lover or not, Positano is the first stop to visit during your holiday. With its breathtaking sea views, this small town offers heavenly beaches and a lively nightlife. Also not to be missed is the gastronomic aspect of the area, which includes typical regional delicacies with a few local details, such as the Positano cake:
  • Amalfi: this small village perched along the cliff will immediately leave you speechless. The colours, nature and artistic beauty make Amalfi a true jewel, whose origins are among the oldest. Legend has it that it was founded by the hero Hercules, while for certain, we know that Amalfi was one of the maritime republics, along with Venice, Genoa and Pisa. This town too has its characteristic foods, among which are the Scialatielli amalfitani.

At the end of your trip, you will return home with a baggage full of experience and, above all, beauty that has filled your eyes. Bright colours, authentic cuisine and typical Italian hospitality will be the backdrop to your road trip, curves included!
