Are deer antlers worth any money? ›

Most of the time, whitetail sheds, and other big game shed antlers, are sold by the pound, though. That number can range from $2-15, sometimes more. The lower end consists of older, whiter, chalkier sheds. The top-end are pristine, brown, unblemished sheds.

Right now there is a big demand for antlers because there are so many different things antlers are used for like crafts, chandeliers, jewelry, dog chews, decoration, knife handles, and medicinal purposes.

While a three-antlered deer is, indeed, rare — it's not unheard of. Steve Edwards, a large animal vet at Michigan's Lakeview Animal Clinic, told the Detroit Free Press the buck is "probably a one-in-a-million thing."

The value of shoulder mounts is related to the quality of the taxidermy, but the average shoulder mount of a whitetail scoring under 150 inches sells for between $350 and $450. Larger bucks demand a higher price, with the best mounts from deer scoring above 150 inches selling for $1,000 or more.

After all, there's serious money in shed hunting, with brokers across the Mountain West buying antlers in bulk to be sawed into dog chews that then sell for $20 to $40 a pound or sold to brokers in China for medicinal purposes.

Antlers drop annually in late winter, typically January through March. The dropped antlers are called “sheds” and the process does not hurt the buck. From spring through summer, the antlers grow back and are usually bigger than the previous year.

Deer and their relatives grow antlers each spring and shed them every winter. Once antlers are shed, the process of growing them begins anew. Male deer have two spots on their skulls called pedicles from which their antlers grow. In the spring, the antlers begin to sprout from the pedicles.

Thickly muscled neck during the rut, although there is still a distinct junction between the neck and shoulders. Chest appears deeper than the hindquarters giving appearance of a well-conditioned racehorse.

The number of antler points a buck has does not correlate with the buck's age. Yearling bucks have been known to grow antlers with eight or 10 points when the habitat and nutrition are good. The spread of the antlers can offer a clue to a buck's age. Yearling bucks rarely have antlers that grow wider than their ears.

Finding any shed is cool, but finding one with five points is a rarity. Also finding a matched pair is a rare find, too, in my experience. In late winter, it is not unusual to get trail cam photos of bucks carrying only one antler.

There is something valuable about being able to put actual tape on antlers from an area you hunt. There is even more value in being able to track a deer's growth from year to year. This data aside, the excitement of a find makes some sheds too precious to do anything with besides watch collect dust.

Antler collectors and outdoor retailers will pay big bucks for big bucks, but it's much rarer than you think. A more common exchange is that mounts are “borrowed” by stores and restaurants, where the hunter maintains the right to take back the mount whenever they want.

The spread of the antlers can offer a clue to a buck's age. Yearling bucks rarely have antlers that grow wider than their ears. A buck with an antler spread well outside the end of the ears is normally a mature or older buck.
