The origin of the Corgi Retriever: The best of the Brits

This adorable hybrid may have existed for longer than we know, but breeders of designer dogs intentionally created this crossbreed in North America in the late ‘90s.

The goal was to mix the outgoing and friendly personality of Corgis and Golden Retrievers, and they continued producing this breed as demands rose.

Although there’s no certainty regarding the physical traits and personality of the Golden Retriever Corgi mix, getting to know each purebred parent will help us understand what this designer pooch inherited from them.

The royal Corgi

Corgis are members of the AKC Herding group. They are larger-than-life little dogs bred in Wales for herding cattle and gained rapid popularity for being Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite breed. She’s said to have owned over 30 corgis – talk about commitment!

The Corgi comes in two breeds: Pembroke Welsh and Cardigan Welsh. The two vary in both appearance and temperament.

Pembrokes have smaller erect ears, fox-like faces, and docked tails. Cardigans rock larger ears with long tails.

Cardigans are more cautious around strangers and are excellent guard dogs. Pembrokes tend to be more outgoing with strangers.

The Cardigan Corgi is a bit larger and can weigh up to 38 pounds (17 kg), while Pembrokes only have a weight of up to 30 pounds (14 kg).

When it comes to height, they both stand at 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30.5 cm) tall. They also have the same lifespan of 12 to 13 years.

The Pup-ular Golden Retriever

“Scottish gundog” isn’t just an awesome potential metal band name – it also refers to the Golden Retriever.

This purebred is part of the AKC Sporting group and stands proud at the podium in 3rd place for the most popular breed. Movie buffs would often see this purebred in different films like Homeward Bound, Airbud, A Dog’s Purpose, and many more!

Golden Retrievers were bred in 19th century Scotland where the goal was to create a dog with enough endurance to hunt by land, water, or through mucky marshes to retrieve several birds at a time.

These loyal and loving retrievers have long and luscious double coats that come in different shades of gold. Aside from that, Goldens are also known for their snout and sweet eyes, while their feathery tails swish side-to-side with grace as they walk.

Golden Retrievers have a height of 20 to 24 inches (51 to 61 cm). For weight, males are heavier weighing 65 to 75 pounds (29 to 34 kg), while females are around 55 to 65 pounds (25 to 29.5 kg). This breed has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Goldens are laid back and non-aggressive in nature, but fear aggression is possible if not properly socialized. Luckily, these dogs are incredibly smart and easily trainable.

What will my Corgi Golden mix look like?

It’s silly, isn’t it? You take one tall, fluffy dog with floppy ears, and mix it with a short, stubby one with ears like Batman. The answer is: There are endless possibilities.

Generally, the Corgi Golden mix will have the broad head of a Golden and the long, low-riding body of a Corgi.

In this short video, you can see a Corgi Golden Retriever mix with a fluffy coat and puppy eyes:

How big does a Corgi Golden Retriever mix get?

These are medium- to large-sized dogs with a weight ranging from 30 to 75 pounds (14 to 34 kg), and their height may reach 10 to 18 inches (25 to 46 cm).

Your Golden Corgi’s height may vary depending on how fluffy he is as every inch counts!

Whichever part of the scale your pooch falls in, this is a breed that is flexible with living situations and would do well in either a house or apartment.

Still, they’re better suited for homes that can provide them a spacious backyard where they run and play freely due to their energy level.

Are Corgi Goldens hypoallergenic?

Corgi Golden mixes are not hypoallergenic. This breed rocks a double coat like both parents, so they will moderately shed, especially during shedding seasons like fall and spring.

Their coats may flaunt the Pembroke Corgi’s fawn or sable colors, or the white-marked combinations of a Cardigan, like brindle and white, or my favorite, blue merle, and white!

If the Golden Retriever genes are stronger, though, he may inherit any shade of stunning gold. But generally, the primary colors of this mixed breed are tan, golden, red, fawn, black, white, and brown.

Golden Corgis know it’s all about personality

The Corgi Golden mix temperament tends to be as loving as both parents. The heart of the household – a fun and upbeat energy witha touch of spunk!

Both the Corgi and Golden are friendly, loyal breeds. So we can expect their hybrid to be exceptional at making new friends. They also fit in well with children and other pets. They’re sappy people-pleasers and aim to make you smile.

Your Corgi Golden will most likely inherit the Golden Retriever’s sporty nature, being playful but not overly competitive. You may find it cute how she can turn any ordinary activity, like cleaning the house or taking out the trash, into a game.

Training the Golden Retriever Corgi mix can be easy if your puppy inherits more of the Golden’s laid-back nature, but may be difficult if they inherit some stubborn Corgi behaviors.

Either way, I strongly recommend early obedience training. Both the Corgi and Golden are smart dogs, so even if there’s some resistance, they’ll eventually catch on, especially if taught with positive reinforcement and yummy treats.

What will your Corgi golden mix need after coming home?

While the Golden Corgi is pretty low-maintenance, easily satisfied with your simple attention and love, they require certain care routines.

Are you ready for a long-term relationship with your new puppy, or does commitment scare you?

Groom the fluff, respect the fluff

You and your incredible opposable thumbs will need to help your Corgi Golden mix maintain its appearance. Weekly brushing may reduce the number of lint rollers you’ll have to invest in, or minimize the dog fur you pull from behind couch cushions.

Caring for your fur baby is a year-round commitment. Attentiveness towards potential problems such as matted fur or skin redness and irritation is a must.

Keep in mind that it would be wise to always remove your dog’s collar before brushing and grooming to tend to extra fur around your fido’s neck.

If this sounds like a lot of work, I’ve found some handy grooming tools to help. You can use a medium or fine-toothed comb to check for fleas, ticks, and tangles or mats. A slicker brush is an excellent tool for untangling or picking debris from your dog’s coat after outside playtime.

Another reminder when cleaning your pet’s ears is to use cotton balls and a small amount of dog-specific ear solution.

What to feed my Corgi Golden Retriever?

It’s essential to feed your puppy the right type and amount of food to fuel their lifestyle. Golden Corgis require a regular feeding schedule and two cups of kibble specially formulated for medium to large, high-energy dogs.

Your canine friend’s diet should be based on her age, size, activity level, and health. Some owners feed their pets depending on their daily caloric requirements.

You can use this calorie calculator to determine how many calories your dog should be consuming in a day.

Be mindful of how many treats you offer, as well. This spunky shorty might even love food as much as they love their families, but they’re prone to obesity.

Exercising your furry team player

As mentioned, Corgi Goldens tend to be bundles of energy. They need at least 30 minutes to an hour of daily exercise. If this sounds like a commitment, try not to think of this as the same one-hour walk around your neighborhood every day.

Instead, you can mix up the routine with fun activities like swimming, playing fetch with frisbees or tennis balls, hiking, and running (if you can keep up!).

I recommend keeping Fido on a leash and investing in a fenced-in yard to keep her safe. This hybrid is like a tiny Olympian with a tendency to have a great sense of adventure.

Will my Corgi Golden Retriever mix be healthy?

In my research, I found that people say crossbreeds are healthier than purebreds because they come from larger gene pools or due to hybrid vigor. While Golden Corgis are generally healthy, there’s still a chance of inheriting illnesses from either parent.

While the Corgi’s long body and stubby legs make for an adorable bread loaf look, the combination comes with some unfortunate side effects.

These dogs are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as intervertebral disc disease, which can cause severe back issues. Long-bodied dogs like Corgis need special attention to keep them from jumping onto or down from higher surfaces.

Corgis are also known to suffer from Von Willebrand’s Disease, a severe blood disorder. They also carry Achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism that gives this silly dog its short and stocky body but can cause significant pain.

For Golden Retrievers, their steady gait makes them appear almost invincible, but unfortunately, they’re not immune to health risks.

Goldens can’t tolerate extreme heat conditions with their long coats and are thus prone to heatstroke.

These dogs also have an unfortunate high risk of cancer, seizures, and mast cell tumors.

All breeds face particular health concerns, but with proper care, Golden Corgis enjoy a lifespan of 10 to 13 years.

Taking your dog to regular veterinary appointments is vital in maintaining their health. The recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, DHPP, where the costs can range from $75 to $100.

Going for the gold: How much is a Corgi Golden Retriever mix?

The price will depend on various factors like the breeder’s location, the bloodline of the purebred parents, the availability of puppies, and more. For a Golden Retriever Corgi mix pup, they can cost around $1,000.

The cost range of this mix is broad as Corgis tend to be $600 to $1,000, while Goldens are in the $500 to $3,000 range. Before you ready your wallet, be sure first that you’re purchasing a puppy from a responsible breeder.

Breeders who care for their breeding stock and pups won’t always have puppies available for sale, will conduct interviews with potential buyers to make sure the little furballs end up with the right owner, and will even let you visit the kennel and the dogs.

You should also be prepared with a set of questions that you wish to ask so you can be confident that you’re going home with a healthy doggo.

If you were allowed to visit, request to see the medical records of the parent breeds, as well as the litter. You may find out more info in this article with puppy buyer questionnaires.

Since this crossbreed is relatively new, I haven’t found specific Corgi Golden mix breeders, but many adorable crossbreeds such as the Golden Corgi end up in shelters, waiting for their fur-ever home.

Corgi Golden Retriever mix: ultimate perfection or greed?

Your ultimate guide to the Corgi Golden Retriever mix dog - K9 Web (7)

There’s no question this breed is a fluffy mix of fun, but I think its contagious smile conceals the dedication required.

This breed needs an active social life and constant exercise. If you prefer a more laid back, quiet lifestyle, you’ll have difficulty keeping up with this particular hybrid.

I see the desire to combine two loving, social butterflies. But have we become too greedy, or uncovered a new treasure? What do you think? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below.
