As both the Corgi and Golden Retriever climb in popularity, it’s no wonder someone crossed both breeds to produce one sturdy yet fluffy pint of golden cuteness: the Corgi Golden Retriever Mix (A.K.A the Golden Corgi).

This canine is a reasonably new designer breed with unpredictable traits.

Here, I’ll lay out everything about both parents so you can decide if adorable is worth the risk!

The origin of the Corgi Retriever: The best of the Brits

This adorable hybrid may have existed for longer than we know, but breeders of designer dogs intentionally created this crossbreed in North America in the late ‘90s.

The goal was to mix the outgoing and friendly personality of Corgis and Golden Retrievers, and they continued producing this breed as demands rose.

Although there’s no certainty regarding the physical traits and personality of the Golden Retriever Corgi mix, getting to know each purebred parent will help us understand what this designer pooch inherited from them.

The royal Corgi

Goldens are laid back and non-aggressive in nature, but fear aggression is possible if not properly socialized. Luckily, these dogs are incredibly smart and easily trainable.

It’s silly, isn’t it? You take one tall, fluffy dog with floppy ears, and mix it with a short, stubby one with ears like Batman. The answer is: There are endless possibilities.

How big does a Corgi Golden Retriever mix get?

These are medium- to large-sized dogs with a weight ranging from 30 to 75 pounds (14 to 34 kg), and their height may reach 10 to 18 inches (25 to 46 cm).

Whichever part of the scale your pooch falls in, this is a breed that is flexible with living situations and would do well in either a house or apartment.

If this sounds like a lot of work, I’ve found some handy grooming tools to help. You can use a medium or fine-toothed comb to check for fleas, ticks, and tangles or mats. A slicker brush is an excellent tool for untangling or picking debris from your dog’s coat after outside playtime.

Another reminder when cleaning your pet’s ears is to use cotton balls and a small amount of dog-specific ear solution.

What to feed my Corgi Golden Retriever?

It’s essential to feed your puppy the right type and amount of food to fuel their lifestyle. Golden Corgis require a regular feeding schedule and two cups of kibble specially formulated for medium to large, high-energy dogs.

Your canine friend’s diet should be based on her age, size, activity level, and health. Some owners feed their pets depending on their daily caloric requirements.

In my research, I found that people say crossbreeds are healthier than purebreds because they come from larger gene pools or due to hybrid vigor. While Golden Corgis are generally healthy, there’s still a chance of inheriting illnesses from either parent.

While the Corgi’s long body and stubby legs make for an adorable bread loaf look, the combination comes with some unfortunate side effects.
