ESCONDIDO — Elizabeth H. Bonner, 82, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001,at Scripps Green Hospital.
Born March 10, 1919, in Tennessee, she lived in Escondido for 20years. She retired as a medical secretary after 21 years for SanCarlos Medical Group.
Mrs. Bonner was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bonner,in 2001. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Franklin andFrances McComas of Fort Wright, Ky.; daughters and son-in-lawMargaret and Aaron Lipton of Wenatchee, Wash., and Nancy Coiro ofPaterson, N.J.; five grandchildren; and fivegreat-grandchildren.
A private cremation and scattering is planned.

Herbert Hinckley, 98
VISTA — Herbert Paul Hinckley, 98, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001,at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born June 17, 1902, in Newbedford, Mass., he lived in Vista for 28years. He was retired as a repairman for A.B. Wollie and Co.
Mr. Hinckley was preceded in death by his wife, Juliette C.Hinckley, in 1986. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-lawJohn and Mary Hinckley of Escondido and Paul and Jane Hinckley ofHicksville, N.Y.; daughter Alice Zigelis of Charlotte, N.C.; sisterDorinda Jaret of Keene, N.H.; grandson Glen Hinckley andstep-grandson Jason Hinckley.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at River BendCemetery in Westerly, R.I. A private cremation is planned.

OCEANSIDE — Jennie W. Flowers, 90, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, atPacific Place Care.
Born Sept. 13, 1910, in Findlay, Ill., she lived in Oceanside for11 years. She was a homemaker.
Ms. Flowers is survived by her nephew, Tom Flowers of Cerritos.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased. Hercremains will be scattered at sea.

Donovan Hilebronner, 69
SAN MARCOS — Donovan Hilebronner, 69, died Thursday, June 14,2001.
Born Oct. 20, 1931, in Sciotoville, Ohio, he lived in San Marcosfor three years and in Southern California for 30 years. He retiredin 1987 as a district manager for Safeway, Inc. He enjoyed golf,tennis and fishing.
Mr. Hilebronner is survived by his wife, Catherine Hilebronner ofSan Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Jean and Tom Jones ofLouisiana; Barbara and Max Dykmans of Rancho Santa Fe, PatriciaHilebronner of Louisiana and Nancy Hilebronner of La Mesa; brotherTed Hilebronner of Friendship, Ohio; and grandchildren BryanCunningham and Kevan Dykmans.
No formal services are planned. A celebration of life is plannedfor a later date.

ESCONDIDO — Griffin F. Phillips, 51, died Thursday, June 14,2001.
Born Dec. 30, 1949, in Illinois, he lived in Escondido for one yearand in San Diego for 10 years. He was a manager at Horton GrandHotel in San Diego.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his mother, FrancesRademacher in 1976. He is survived by his stepfather, PeterRademacher of Escondido; brothers Peter Rademacher II of Wilson,N.Y., Curtis Rademacher of Phoenix and Thomas Rademacher ofHollister; sister Jennifer Bielasz of Escondido; and numerousnieces and nephews.

Patrick Reilly, 78
LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Patrick Reilly, 78, died Wednesday, June 13,2001, in Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash.
Born March 20, 1923, in Dundee, Scotland, he was a former residentof Carlsbad. He served in the British Royal Air Corps in Burmaduring World War II. He came to the United States in 1955 andworked at Hughes Aircraft and the Duetsche Co. as a machinist. Heenjoyed golf.
Mr. Reilly was preceded in death by his two sisters and threebrothers. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Kevin andJayma Reilly of Vista and Barty and Christy Reilly of Carlsbad;daughter and son-in-law Bridget and Steve Autenreith ofLeavenworth; brothers Jimmy Reilly of Dundee, Scotland and JoeReilly of Oceanside; and 12 grandchildren.
No formal services are planned at the request of the deceased.

Ernest Derho, 81
ESCONDIDO — Ernest C. Derho, 81, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, athis home.
Born March 20, 1920, in Mishawaka, Ind., he lived in Escondido fortwo years and in Riverside for 38 years. He was in the lifeinsurance business for 30 years. As a chartered life underwriter hereceived the National Qualify award each year. He received the “Manof the Year” in 1957 from Northwestern Life Insurance Co. inMilwaukee. He served in the U.S. Army Cavalry during World War IIas a horse trainer and later as a paratrooper with the 101stScreaming Eagles Airborne and was awarded the Purple Heart. He wasa boxing champion, both amateur and professional and started aschool of boxing. He won many tournaments as a pool champion. Hecoached a woman’s pool team and was a pool instructor at theUniversity of Riverside. He was a member of the First BaptistChurch in Riverside and Bethel Christian Center in RanchoBernardo.
Mr. Derho was preceded in death by his sons, Andrew Derho in 1967and John Derho in 1981; four brothers; and five sisters. He issurvived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie “Steve” Derho; daughterand son-in-law Judy and Gary Bauer of Escondido; son anddaughter-in-law Paul and Trish Derho of Escondido; grandchildrenChristine, Stephen, Sarah and Andrew; and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon, today, June 17, at BethelChristian Center in Rancho Bernardo at the Joslyn Senior Center inthe Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A graveside service isscheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Riverside NationalCemetery in Riverside.

Loretta Adams, 97
ESCONDIDO — Loretta M. Adams, 97, died Sunday, June 10, 2001.
Born June 28, 1903, in Chicago, she retired in 1968 as a supervisorfor the County of San Diego Health and Human Services in theOceanside office. She had been a secretary in the war department inWashington D.C. She was one of the original 11 families thatfounded St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Encinitas. Since1962, she was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Del Mar andserved with the ladies auxilliary and was a volunteer for the St.Leo Mission Thrift Shop. She helped manager her husband’s business,W.E. Adams Building Contractor. She had been a member of the SanDieguito Square Dance Club.
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Adams inMarch 1987; daughter Patricia in March 1957; son James in September1945; and sister Katherine Kundinger in March 2001. She is survivedby her son and daughter-in-law David and Carla of San Diego;grandson David and his wife Suzy; two great-grandchildren; andthree nephews.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, June 17, atEl Camino Chapel in San Diego. A Mass and rosary is scheduled for9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at St. James Catholic Church in SolanaBeach with the Rev. Lawrence Purcell officiating. Burial willfollow at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego with the Rev.Purcell officiating.

Margaret Davis Larkin
Margaret Davis Larkin of Carlsbad, died May 28, in San Diego aftera brief bout with esophageal cancer. Born on Aug. 11, 1918, in NewYork City, Peggy grew up in Minnesota and later moved to San DiegoNorth County where she lived for almost 40 years. After retiring asa Family Intervention Therapist for the Care Unit at Mission BayHospital/San Diego, she contributed her time to several charitableorganizations, most notably as a board member of The CountryFriends/North County, as vice president of the San Dieguito AnimalCare Center in Rancho Santa Fe, and as a volunteer at The CountryFriends’ Shop in Rancho Santa Fe. She was an active volunteer atSt. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar and at Scripps Hospital’sMcDonald Center.
Peggy loved all sports, renewing her season ticket to the Chargersgames even after the climb to her seat became arduous. She playedgolf all her life and spent countless happy hours on the county’smany beautiful courses. An active resident of Rancho Carlsbad,Peggy gleefully sang in the Mobile-Aires choir and contributed herpennies to weekly bridge and poker games. She also loved thesymphony and theater and attended them regularly in San Diego.
She followed the careers and interests of her three daughters aswell as her nieces, nephews, their families, and all their bestfriends. Her family and many friends will miss her kindness,compassion, humor, and courage. She was preceded in death by herparents, Grace and Donald D. Davis, her sister Mary Davis Pierson,and her ex-husband, Arthur E. Larkin, Jr. Surviving are threedaughters, Wendy Davis Larkin of San Rafael, Barbara Lou Larkin ofMidland, Ga., and Margaret Larkin Hutchison of Valatie, NY and herbrother Donald D. Davis, Jr. of Shorewood, MN.

Kenneth Raymond Mangan
Ken Mangan described himself as a “teacher of deaf children.”Others would consider him an outstanding educator, an avid golferor a prolific story teller. To his family and friends, he was agreat role model of solid integrity, honor and intelligence. Hedied on June 5, 2001, in San Diego.
Kenneth R. Mangan, born Nov. 29, 1916, in a small farming communitynear Milwaukee, was one of nine children who struggled through theGreat Depression. He studied at Milwaukee State Teacher’s Collegein the late ’30s and received his credentials for teaching deafchildren. His first teaching job was at the Michigan School for theDeaf in flint, where he was a teacher and then Dean of Students. Itwas at MSD that he met his wife, Kathryn Winkelman. Ken served as alieutenant in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Pacific theaterduring World War II. He returned to MSD after the war and thenaccepted a position with the Wisconsin State Department of SpecialEducation and moved his family to Stoughton, Wis. His next job wasprincipal of the Gallaudet Day School in St. Louis, Mo. Whilethere, he earned at EdD. degree in special education fromWashington University. From there, he took the position ofSuperintendent of the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville,Ill., where he served masterfully for 18 years as n educator andcommunity leader. His wife Kay, died in 1968.
Upon retirement from the superintendent’s position, Ken moved toCanoga Park, where he held a professorship in the Department ofSpecial Education at the California State University, Northridge.In 1983, he and his wife, Enid Terpstra, retired to Escondido to benear his only daughter and her husband and children, who live inSan Diego. For several years, Ken was an adjunct professor in theEducation of the Deaf program at San Diego State University.
As an avid golfer, a passion he passed on to his two grandchildrenand many other relatives and friends, he won many golfing trophies,two of which were for “holes-in-one.” He was a member for manyyears of the Jacksonville and the Escondido Country Clubs.
Kenneth is survived by his widow, Evelyn Siebrecht, his daughterKathee M. Christensen and her husband, Ben, his two grandchildren,Kyra Phillips Assadsadeh and Charles D. Phillips and their spouses,respectively John Assadsadeh and Carrie Whipple Phillips, and hisgreat-grandson King Oliver Mangan Phillips. In addition, Kenneth issurvived by his own siblings, older brother Martin Mangan, hissisters Margaret Averill and Myrtle Martz living in Milwaukee andyounger brother, Edward Mangan of Palm Desert.
A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church ofEscondido on Broadway Street in Escondido at 3 p.m., July 1.Persons wishing to honor his memory may donate to the Kenneth R.Mangan Scholarship in Education of the Deaf, San Diego StateUniversity, Scholarship Office, San Diego, CA 92182.
Harold E. Williams, 76
Harold Williams passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001.
He was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. He lived in Escondidofor the past 17 years. A veteran of World War II, he is survived byhis wife of 53 years, Wanda Williams; a son, Harold D. Williams ofRedwood City; a daughter, Gale Vozar; and grandson Shane Vozar,both of Escondido.

James Ahlzen Gray Sr.
James Ahlzen Gray Sr., a longtime resident of Vista, died inPleasanton on June 14. He was 80 years old. Born in Idyllwild, heattended San Jacinto High School and joined the U.S. Navy servingin World War II as a gunners mate first class from 1942 to 1945. Heworked in the lumber industry for more than 30 years and was themanager of Geib Lumber in Vista for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Eileen (Lee) Gray ofDublin; two sons, James Jr. and his wife Christine of Vista, BobSawyer and his wife Betty of Alameda; daughter Barbara Bond and herhusband, Keith of Castro Valley; sister Betty Peters and herhusband, Pete of Riverside; 12 grandchildren; and fivegreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife,Neva Gray after 35 years of marriage. James was a loving father andgrandfather. He was a member of the Vista Rotary Club for more than30 years and past president of 1966-67.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20 atSan Jacinto Valley Cemetery, 2555 Santa Fe in San Jacinto.

Born March 26, 1926, in Chelsea, Mass., she lived in Oceanside for33 years. She was retired from Bank of America and was a member ofElks Emblem Club, serving two terms as an officer.
Mrs. Harvey is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gerry Harvey ofOceanside; sons William G. Harvey Jr. of Pittsboro, N.C., andRussell E. Harvey of Cranford, N.J.; daughter Debra Ann Allen ofSan Marcos; brother William H.
